1. Also, pocket gopher. any one of various ratlike rodents of North and Central America, with large cheek pouches, long teeth, long claws, especially on the front feet, and small eyes and ears; pouched rat. Gophers dig holes in the ground and are herbivorous.
2. a striped ground squirrel of the western plains of the United States.
3. a land tortoise of the southern United States that burrows in the ground.
4. = gopher snake. (Cf.gopher snake)
